This is known as favism. As in most cases of hemolytic anemia, the peripheral blood smear (microscope slide of the blood) is very helpful.
Affected people lack the ability to tolerate biochemical oxidative stress, and red cell haemolysis is the most important clinical consequence.
It was once thought that favism was an allergic most individuals with g6pd deficiency do not develop symptoms after eating fava beans and individuals who do develop symptoms will not always do so. Most people with g6pd deficiency don't have any symptoms. Abdominal ultrasound may be useful in assessing for splenomegaly and gallstones. G6pd deficiency, a defect in the hexose monophosphate shunt pathway, is the most common disorder of red blood cell (rbc) metabolism.
